This painting celebrates the interconnectedness of life, and the peace that arises from knowing we are one small part of a bigger picture.
The central feature of this landscape is a murmuration - stunning aerial displays by collections of birds that create beautiful shapes in the sky. There is no leader to a murmuration flock, instead each bird responds to the movements of its six or seven closest neighbours, while trying to stay near the centre of the flock. I found this a beautiful symbol of harmony and awareness of one's place within the larger community, which for me is the pillar of peace.
Besides this, the murmuration symbolises how all beings are connected to one another, all life is interdependent, and the peace in knowing we may be different, but we are all one.
The shimmering metallic watercolours on the birds' feathers catch the light, creating a mesmerising effect, as if these wings were indeed flapping in the coastal breeze.
